About

Music Under the Canopy is a series of weekend summer festivals at Brenton Skating Plaza in Downtown Des Moines. The series will be the first set of concerts taking place under a one-of-a-kind canopy, installed at Brenton Skating Plaza (520 Robert D. Ray Dr.) in May of 2014. 

 

Music Under the Canopy is produced by the Downtown Community Alliance.

Band Bios

Bejae fleming

BeJae (pronounced B.J.) Fleming is an energetic and entertaining performer of Southern blues and finely crafted original material. With passionate singing, innovative guitar work and engaging storytelling, she celebrates tribulation and triumph in songs that range from gentle to gritty, from heartfelt to humorous.


Susan Werner

Originating from Iowa, Werner keeps her audience guessing and laughing simultaneously, lending her wry humor and passionate voice to subjects such as farmers, agrochemicals, climate change, drought, longing for a sense of place, and the movement towards sustainable agriculture.

Greg Brown

Is an American folk musician from Iowa. Brown spent several years traveling with a band, before returning to Iowa where he performed live and pursued his songwriting career.

Mary McAdams

Mary McAdams lives in Des Moines and her music is modern folk. She has performed at music festivals, art festivals, house concerts, coffeehouses and schools. Mary performs solo, duo, and with her full band.


Coles Whalen

Coles Whalen is an American pop country singer-songwriter based in Denver. She has toured extensively through the United States and Canada and has released five independent records. 


Katelyn Epperly

Katelyn Epperly is a Des Moines native! After her time on American Idol, Katelyn moved from LA to Nashville to finish her BBA while continuing her career in music. She released her debut EP "Southern Gothic" in March 2013 and has released several singles since including her June 23 release of "Wolf in the Garden." Just recently graduated, she is writing and producing new music in Nashville and continuing to play shows nationally. 


Anna Nalick

Anna Nalick is a platinum selling singer and songwriter from California. In addition to writing all her own music, Anna has been writing for other artists since the age of 15.

Damon Dotson

Damon Dotson has toured the midwest for the part of nine years. Earning a representation for a great live set, Damon has played top venues in Ames, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, and Iowa City, Iowa; Chicago, Minneapolis and Omaha.

Jason Walsmith

Based in Des Moines, Iowa, Jason is the lead singer of the Rock/Folk band The Nadas. Jason also has a solo career, he writes sings and plays guitar.



John Waite

Hailing from England, this rock star/balladeer/storyteller began his successful music career as bassist and lead vocalist for the Babys. As a solo artist he has had many international hit's including 1984's "Missing You", a No. 1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 and top ten on the UK Singles Chart.

What If It Rains?

- The Show will go on rain or shine, and we have the benefit of the Canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza.

 

Can I Bring In My Own Chair?

- Upright folding and camping chairs are allowed outside of the rink and general admission areas only. All other seating is reserved.

 

Will There Be Food For Sale?

- Yes, Coca-Cola products, beer, and wine will be available for purchase, in addition to selections from the following food vendors:

  •   Jose's Tacos
  •   Mediterranean Grill
  •   Magnolia Kitchen & Grocery


Can I Bring My Dog?

- Pets are not allowed at the Brenton Skating Plaza. Service animals are allowed.

 

Will There Be Any Handicapped Parking Available?

- Handicapped parking is available at the corner of Robert D. Ray Drive and Grand Avenue. VIP Handicapped Parking is available in the City Hall parking lot.

 

Where is VIP Parking?

- VIP Parking is in the CIty Hall Parking lot, on the southeast corner of Grand Ave. and Robert D. Ray Drive.

- A parking attendant will punch your VIP ticket when you enter to park.

Americana Music Festival

Join us for the first of three weekend music festivals at Brenton Skating Plaza! The Americana Music Festival is presented by Meredith Corporation is first up and will feature the Jayhawks on June 20, John Hiatt on June 21, and Jason Isbell on June 22. Tickets for these concerts are on sale now and can be purchased for each day or at a discounted rate for a 3-day festival pass. Additional lineup announcements will be made in the weeks to come.

Band Bios

Bo Ramsey & The Highway 12:

Bo Ramsey was born and raised in Burlington Iowa, Ramsey played a vital role in shaping Eastern Iowa's distinctive blues-rock hybrid. He has been inducted into the Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. His band, Highway 12 is an up-and-coming Canadian country music band with a charismatic stage presence.  

 

 

The Honeydogs:

The Honeydogs have been making records for over 20 years. The Twin Cities-based band has always defied categorization and continues to push into new musical territory while remaining connected to earlier American music. Singer-songwriter Adam Levy has frequently been called one of the best songwriters of the era.

 


 

The Jayhawks:

Emerged from the Minneapolis music scene in the1980s, The Jayhawks have a rootsy sound that isn't quite rock or country. The Jayhawks have made music in 4 different decades and are as vital now as they were in 1985.

Josh Davis:

Josh Davis is a songwriter and singer, born in Boone, IA. What began with solo acoustic performances for friends, evolved over the years through different influences, styles, and bands that played stages both small and large.

 


 

Randy Burk & The Prisoners:

This energetic band was formed in 2002 in Atlantic, Iowa. They have since expanded musically and geographically.

 

 

Brother Trucker:

Originating from Iowa, this native roots rock band is considered to have the "Iowa sound." They have toured the Midwest extensively since 2000.

The Pines:

Founded by Iowa natives David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey, indie-roots band The Pines surprisingly met in Arizona, where they both lived in a Mexican barrio and first began playing together. The Pines weave together many musical styles to create their own unique sound that is hip and haunting.

Nicholas David:

Nicholas David Mrozinski is a vibrant, dynamic and multi-talented singer/songwriter from Saint Paul, Minnesota. For more than a decade, Nicholas has composed alternative soul music that connects with people worldwide on a deeply human level.

John Hiatt And The Combo:

John is an American rock guitarist, pianist, singer, and songwriter born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has converted his personal tragedies into a life-long catalogue of recordings.

James Biehn Band:

James Biehn is a guitarist/vocalist from Des Moines, Iowa. The James Biehns Band was formed in 2012.

Cory Chisel:

Cory grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin as a preacher's son. He was sheltered from pop music until his musician uncle taught him the blues. From then on he has thought of songwriting as a by-product of existing.

Jason Isbell:

Jason is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Green Hill, Alabama. He is a former member of the Drive-By Truckers, but is best known for his solo career.

- The Show will go on rain or shine, and we have the benefit of the Canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza.

 

Can I Bring In My Own Chair?

- Upright folding or camping chairs will be permitted for the Americana Music Festival in specific designated areas only.

- No lounge/chaise/sunbathing chairs or blankets/towels.

 

Will The General Admission Have Any Chair Seating At All?

- There will be some picnic tables and benches outside of the rink area.

- Upright folding and camping chairs will be allowed in specific designated areas inside the venue.

- VIP Tickets include a separate gathering area with some premium seating.

 

Will There Be Food For Sale?

- Yes, Coca-Cola products, beer, and wine will be available for purchase, in addition to selections from the following food vendors:

  •   Jose's Tacos
  •   Mediterranean Grill
  •   Magnolia Kitchen & Grocery

Can I Bring My Dog?

- No, no pets allowed on site during the event.

 

Will There Be Any Handicapped Parking Available?

- Yes, there is a handicapped spot on Robert D. Ray Drive near the ramp entrance to the rink. There are other handicapped parking spots available on the street and in the City Hall Lot.

Band Bios

WORLD PORT

WORLD PORT is an Emmy winning, Des Moines, Iowa, based band that brings the excitement of a world street festival to each show.

 



Parranderos Latin Combo

PLC has grown to a band of 14 members from Des Moines, Iowa. They focus on making the party happen with a rock steady latin combo.

 



Hiroshima

is an American jazz fusion/smooth jazz/Asian-American jazz band formed in 1974. Named for the Japanese city of Hiroshima, the band is best known for the fusing of Japanese music and other forms of world music into its playing.

 


Steve Grismore Trio

An organ trio consisting of Mitch Towne, Mark Grimm, and Steve Grismore. This trio has performed at numerous jazz festivals.

The Hands of Time Quartet featuring Chris Merz

Originating from Washington, Iowa, Chris Merz is a professor at the University of Northern Iowa and an upbeat jazz performer.

 



Des Moines Big Band

The Des Moines Big Band was founded in 1959 and has been going strong ever since. Well known for hundreds of miles around, it has become a regular stop for touring artists.

 



Patricia Barber

Coming from Nebraska, Barber is an American jazz singer, pianist, songwriter, and bandleader. Her music is centered on her singing, in a fairly low register and a traditional blues-jazz style, and her piano playing, which is technically accomplished.

 


Damani Phillips

Dr. Phillips is a native of Pontiac, MI, where he began playing at the age of 10. He currently serves as assistant professor of jazz studies and African-American studies at the University of Iowa.

 


Arturo Sandoval

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba. He has evolved into one of the world's most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

 

 

Iowa Jazz Hall of fame all star band

is a collection of Des Moines Community Jazz Center Hall of Fame inductees, including Jim Oatts, Susie Miget, Jim Eklof, Paul Bridson, Tanner Taylor, David Bohl.


Dominick Farinacci

is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, big band leader, and is currently signed to major label E1 Music. Farinacci was one of 18 artists worldwide invited to be a part of the inaugural class of the Jazz Studies Program at The Juilliard.
